Mathematics

What will I learn?

Mathematics at A-level is divided into six modules covering work from four main sections:
  • C1 and C2 are compulsory modules for AS level.
  • C3 and C4 are compulsory modules for A2 level.
The other modules will be chosen from S1 & 2, M1 & 2, D1 & 2
Pure mathematics (Core mathematics): This is the study of relationships between values following certain rules and involves arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
Statistics: This involves analysis of data and involves statistics and probability.
Discrete mathematics: This is the study of the maths to make decisions about structures and networks.
Mechanics: This is the study of movement of objects.
Maths A-level is designed to allow you to develop your understanding of maths and extend your range of mathematical skills. You will develop the ability to reason logically and construct mathematical proof. You will acquire the skills used in technology such as calculators and computers.

What are the entry requirements?

5 A* - C subjects at GCSE with at least a grade B in Mathematics.
GCSE Statistics is not necessary but will support your studies for the S1 module.

How will I be assessed?

All modules are assessed by external examinations with Core 1, Core 3 examinations taken in January of Year 12 and Year 13 respectively and the other modules in June.
The modules are separately marked out of 100 with the final grade based upon the total out of 300 (for AS) and 600 (for A2).
Coursework is no longer set by the examination board for any of the Maths qualifications.

Future opportunities

Mathematics is a hugely important subject because it supports the higher level study of Science, Business, Economics, Earth Science and many other subjects.
‘A-Level Maths Equals Money’ was the headline for an article by Harvey McGavin in the TES(19/02/99). ‘People with a maths A-level go on to earn significantly more than their peers with equivalent qualifications in different subjects, according to new research’ he wrote. ‘A possible explanation for this result is that maths skills learned at A-level, such as logical thinking, problem solving and statistical analysis, may be closer to those actually used in the workplace than the skills developed in other subjects.’

Is there anything I need to know?

Many university courses consider it to be an advantage if you have studied A-level mathematics.

Further Mathematics

What will I learn?

You must also be studying Mathematics before you can consider taking Further Mathematics.
Further Mathematics at A-level is divided into an additional six modules.
The modules build on the Maths A-level content and will include study of Further Pure 1 with five other modules from FP2, 3 & 4, Mechanics 1 & 2 and Discrete 2

What are the entry requirements?

5 A* - C subjects at GCSE with at least a grade B in Mathematics.
If you are considering Further Maths you must have especially good mathematical ability and be sufficiently dedicated to your studies to being willing to put in extra hours of study beyond the everyday school timetable.

How will I be assessed?

All modules are assessed by external examinations with Discrete 2 and Mechanics 2 module examinations taken in January of Year 12 and Year 13 respectively and the other modules in June.
The modules are separately marked out of 100 with the final grade based upon the total out of 300 (for AS) and 600 (for A2).
One of the module marks from FP1, 2, 3 or 4 and no Core units must be included in the final grade, but the remaining module marks are put together to give the best overall grade combination for both awards in Maths and Further Maths.
Coursework is no longer set by the examination board for any of the Maths qualifications.

Future opportunities

If you are considering studying any Science based subject at university a qualification in Further Maths will be an advantage. If you are considering studying Mathematics at university, Further Maths will be a positive advantage.

Is there anything I need to know?

Not always a popular choice, Further Maths is taught in small groups that give lots of opportunity for specialist teaching and learning.
Further Mathematicians discover a special interest shared with one another and the opportunity to really push the boundaries of mathematical thought.

GCSE Re-sit Mathematics

What will I learn?

Revisit GCSE Mathematics.
Number, algebra, handling data, trigonometry, shape, space and measure

What are the entry requirements?

A minimum grade D for GCSE level Mathematics
If you are considering GCSE re-sit Mathsyou must be sufficiently dedicated to your studies to being willing to put in extra hours of study beyond the everyday school timetable.

How will I be assessed?

Two written examination papers in June, one with a scientific calculator and one without
Coursework is no longer set by the examination board for any of the Maths qualifications.

Future opportunities

Maths is one of the core subjects set for GCSE. If you are not going to close the door to many future career opportunities, it is important to have a grade C or above in Maths.

Is there anything I need to know?

All students will be entered at Higher level (grades A* - D)

I just wanted the opportunity to thank you and all your staff for making our daughter’s first year at Driffield School such a successful and enjoyable experience. Since starting last September we have been impressed by the feedback from your staff in way of letters, postcards, praise and encouragement for our daughter. it is very much appreciated.

Parents of Year 7 student

I am writing to congratulate the Year 10 and Year 11 students who volunteered to take part in the mock interview process today which I was part of…. Students had taken time to do preparation work and the effort to look at the part of an interviewee. The students were a credit to the school and their parents. They were eloquent, enthusiastic and asked pertinent and searching questions of the interviewers.

Business Mentor

I would like to pass on our compliments to the staff for their positive input over the last term and a half. We are very pleased with our daughter’s progress and significant improvement in many subjects.

Parent of Y10 student

My wife and I were delighted to be able to obtain tickets for the Saturday performance of 42nd Street. We wish to applaud all those involved in the brilliant show – not just the main characters, tap dancers and singers, but the excellent musicians and their two teachers; the remarkably efficient scene shifters; and all of your staff responsible for a really professional production.

Parent of student

I am writing to thank Driffield School and the Sports Department for their help and support during 2007. We ran four very successful school biathlons (run/swim) in Driffield. Thank you for your continued support.

British Pentathlon Development Officer

We are delighted with our daughter's transfer to Driffield School. She is enthusiastic about everything - her lessons, teachers and the other students - she never stops talking about them when she gets home. It is lovely to see her re-discovering her enjoyment of school life. Thank you for all your help and support with this.

Parent of Year 10 student

My daughter has just completed her A Levels and has now left Driffield School. However, I couldn’t let the occasion go without writing to thank you and your school for looking after her and giving her such a fine education – and more. Her splendid ‘A’ Level results stand testimony to hard work on her part and a lot of effort, encouragement and perseverance from her teachers.

Parent of Year 13 student

I would just like to know how much I enjoyed Driffield School’s production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The singing, notably from pupils in the lead parts, was fabulous. The acting in every case was excellent as was the musical accompaniment from the orchestra. Well done to all involved for supporting and encouraging the students in this way.

Parent of a student

On behalf of the President and members of Driffield Rotary Club, I write to thank the school for the cheque for £456.63, donated to go towards the cost of rebuilding the school in Sri Lanka destroyed by the Tsunami. It was very generous of the school’s Student Council to agreed to give the proceeds from the non-uniform in July to this very worthwhile project.

The International Committee of the Rotary Club

May I take this opportunity to thank your staff for a wonderful trip to Cork with the Driffield School Swing Band. The students were impeccable in all respects and a credit to the school and their teachers.

Parent of a student

We wish to place on record our sincere thanks, and would ask you to pass on our gratitude to all the members of staff who taught our daughter, particularly in the past two ‘A’ Level years.
