Drama And Theatre Studies - AS/A2 Course

What will I learn?
The course comprises 4 Units of work done over two years. Students can study this course for one year as an AS level or two full years to gain as A2 qualification. The course is both practical and theoretical aiming to:
- Develop students’ interest in drama and theatre as participants and informed members of an audience.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of major influences in theatre.
- Offer a range of opportunities to develop drama and theatre skills creatively and imaginatively.
- Integrate theory and practice.
What are the entry requirements?
5 A* - C in any subjects at GCSE. You do not need to have studied this course at GCSE to do AS level. However you must have confidence and performing skills, an interest in learning the subject’s history and you must understand the written/theory aspect of the course is as important as the practical elements.
What will I study and how will I be assessed?
Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and Theatre
Internally assessed: 40% of the total As Marks, 20% of the GCE mark
- The exploration of two contrasting play texts in a practical and active way. At least one of the plays will be studied in light of a recognised theatre practitioner.
- You will be required to submit a set of ‘Exploration Notes’ on the two texts studied.
- You will experience a live theatre performance and submit an evaluation.
Unit 2 - Theatre Text in performance
Externally assessed: 60% of the total As Marks, 30% of the GCE mark
- Perform a monologue or a duologue.
- Contribute to a performance of a professionally published play by a known writer.
- Provide a concept of the interpretation of chosen roles.
Unit 3 - Exploration of dramatic performance
Internally assessed: 40% of the total A2 Marks, 20% of the GCE mark
- You will research and develop a performance for an identified audience.
- Complete an evaluation of the process and performance.
Unit 4
Externally assessed: 60% of the total A2 Marks, 30% of the GCE mark
- Written Exam for 2 hours and 30 minutes.
- Section A and B Explore one set text as a director both practically and theoretically.
- Section C: Explore historic time period production and compare with a contemporary production.
