As Environmental Studies (AQA 1441)
What will I learn?
Environmental Studies is the study of how planet Earth works and the impact of humans and their technology on the planet. It also tries to offer solutions to these problems.
It is taught via teacher notes, a new text book, fact sheets, web links, field trips, and guest speakers.
An ideal choice for :
- a pure science student (biology, chemistry or physics) who wants to balance their curriculum with a practical science
- or an arts/humanities student who wants to broaden their curriculum with a science subject
AS Level (1441)
Has 2 units : The Living Environment – planet Earth’s unique conditions for life, wildlife conservation, how to conserve
How will I be assessed?
Unit 1 : The Living Environment = 1 hour exam, 60 marks, 40% of the total AS marks.
Unit 2 : The Physical Environment = 1 hour 30 mins, 80 marks, 60% of the total AS marks.
Can be sat in January or June, see AQA web site below for past papers.
Entry requirements
An interest in environmental issues, local and global, is essential, as is an enjoyment of practical (outdoor) fieldwork and visits. A grade C or higher in science and maths is preferred but not essential, and a geography GCSE grade helps too. You do not need to be a lentil-eating tree hugger!
Future opportunities
Environmental studies is a rapidly growing subject at university and career level and offers many diverse career opportunities e.g. environmental health, urban planning, local authority/council management, conservation, landscape management, mining, tourism, the science and technology industries, research and development, teaching and many others.
