Spanish GCSE

Spanish students

What will I learn?

Studying Spanish at GCSE requires students to gain a good knowledge of a range of topics, which will be of great practical use if you visit the country. In lessons, you will develop the four language learning skills of Listening (20%), Speaking (30%), Reading (20%) and Writing (30%).

You will develop your ability to use a dictionary efficiently and become a more independent learner.
You will need to work co-operatively with a partner in order to improve your confidence when speaking Spanish.
You will have regular access to ICT facilities and a range of appropriate resources.
You will need to learn vocabulary for each topic covered.

What are the entry requirements?

You can choose to continue the Spanish studies you began in Year 7.

Enthusiastic and committed students can also begin the study of Spanish as a second foreign language at the start of Year 10 and obtain a GCSE at the end of the two year course.

How will I be assessed?

Writing is assessed through controlled assessment tasks which will be completed in school. During Years 10 and Year 11, you will produce a minimum of two short pieces of writing in Spanish and the best two will be submitted. Each of the pieces of writing should be approximately 300 words and dictionaries can be used.

Speaking is assessed through at least two controlled assessment tasks with your teacher in Year 10 and Year 11. East task wil be 4-6 minutes.

Reading is assessed by an exam in Year 11. 35 minutes at Foundation Level and 45 minutes at Higher Level.

Listening is assessed by an exam in Year 11.
35 minutes at Foundation Level and 45 minutes at Higher Level.

You can be entered at Foundation Level or Higher Level in each skill.

Future opportunities

A good grade at GCSE will enable you to continue your study of Spanish to AS and beyond. Some universities prefer students to have a language GCSE for degrees in a wide variety of subjects.

Is there anything I need to know?

We have a team of three full time staff. All our teaching rooms have whiteboards with projectors. We are well resourced and you will be provided with a range of booklets covering the various skills which will enable you to achieve at a high grade. The A* - C pass rate is consistently high.

I just wanted the opportunity to thank you and all your staff for making our daughter’s first year at Driffield School such a successful and enjoyable experience. On behalf of the President and members of Driffield Rotary Club, I write to thank the school for the cheque for £456.63, donated to go towards the cost of rebuilding the school in Sri Lanka destroyed by the Tsunami.
