Students will learn about key aspects of British, European and World History – key events, people and changes from a range of perspectives, political, religious and cultural. The content is very wide-ranging and includes:
- the study of how medicine has developed from prehistoric to modern day times, including all the interesting parts in-between, eg the Black Death, medieval cures for illness and Victorian living conditions and disease
- the study of how America developed in the 19th Century, from an underdeveloped country to a vastly populated country, drawing in people from all over the world.The part that Native Indians, settlers, cowboys, cattlemen and the US Army played in shaping the country.
- EITHER the study of your local environment, which involves analysing the development of local castles in Pickering and Helmsley and the lives of the people experienced therein.
- OR the study of a modern world topic – Northern Ireland. How Britain gained involvement in the island of Ireland and how this led to the establishment of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, with the ongoing issues of politics, religion and culture that are experienced today.
Entry Requirements
An ability to read and write fluently. A willingness and pleasure derived from expressing ideas verbally and through extended writing.
Method of Assessment
- Throughout the course in end of topic tests.
- Through one piece of controlled assessment assessed by the teacher - 25% of the overall GCSE.
- Through two examinations; Paper 1 – 2 hours, Paper 2 – 1½ hours.
