GSCE Design & Technology: Food Technology

The course provides an opportunity to design and produce innovative new food products taking into account exciting and original consumer trends. During the course students will learn about Food as a design material and replicate the work of a Product designer. This will also provide the opportunity to carry out product evaluations, trialling and testing new food ideas including sensory testing as well as considering how food products are produced on a large scale in industry. The subject also provides the opportunity to use ICT and specialist software to enhance design work.
Entry Requirements
Students should enjoy being creative and imaginative when working with food and be prepared to complete controlled assessment and research in their own time. Students will also be expected to provide ingredients for food practical lessons on a regular basis.
Method of Assessment
This is a two year course where core skills are delivered throughout Year 10 in the form of focused practical tasks and design based topics. This work will form the preparation for Year 11 when a piece of controlled assessment is completed which involves working to a design brief to design and produce a food product for a specific situation. The projects are reviewed by the exam board every two years. This piece of work accounts for 60% of the final GCSE grade and a written exam accounts for the remaining 40%.
Future opportunities
There is the opportunity for students to pursue their interest in this subject by pursuing an AS/A2 level course of study. Career opportunities are very extensive in the field of food including new product development, food marketing, market research, catering, retail, dietetics, nutrition, health promotion and teaching.
Further Information
This course aims to develop the enjoyment of Food Technology as well as providing opportunities to be creative. In addition to this, students will learn many transferable skills which will help their broader school career. These include the use of ICT, planning and managing time, problem solving, communication skills, numeracy as well as working with others.
