GCSE Science - Dual Award
This is a very exciting time in Science Education. From September 2011 all students will study the new Science syllabuses which have a changed emphasis towards “How Science Works”. Students are set based on ability for Science and they will study either GCSE Science or BTEC Applied Science.

What will I learn?
The students will study Core Science and this GCSE will be awarded at the end of year 10. In year 11 students will either continue with Additional Science. Additional Science leads to a second GCSE Science qualification. There is also the possibility to opt for more Science and follow Triple Science which leads to a qualification in each of the 3 Science subjects. (See Triple Science entry.) Students are taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics by a team of specialist teachers, equal access to all 3 Sciences is achieved by a rotation system.
Topics will be taught using a range of teaching and learning styles and will include opportunities to develop reading and listening skills, discussion, pracitcal sessions and inividual and group work.
How will I be assessed?
Core Science will be examined in year 10. There will be 2 tiers (Higher and Foundation) and a C grade will be achievable from either tier. The examination is worth 75% of the final mark.
Coursework is 25% of the final mark and is an Investigative Skills Assignment (ISA) which is based on investigating a scientific problem.
BTEC Applied Science
Students who find Science challenging and have shown they have difficulty in examinations will follow the BTEC Applied Science course. We offer BTEC Extended Certificate which, if successful can lead to a qualification which is equivalent to 2 GCSE passes at grades A, B or C depending on the level reached. The course is assessed by regular assignments which are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
What are the entry requirements?
You do not have to opt to do either of these sciences. All students have to study Science until the end of compulsory education which is the end of year 11 so all students will study either Triple Science, GSCE Science or BTEC Extended certificate.
Future Opportunities
It is possible to study A-Level Sciences at Driffield School if you have completed the GCSE Science course. The BTEC Applied Science course does not prepare students for A-level Sciences. A qualification in Science at GCSE or equivalent is considered essential for entry into many jobs and professions. Many professions and FE courses demand Science at GCSE grade C or above. If you choose to study Sciences at A level you must have 2 GCSEs in Science at grade B or above. Entry to many University courses requires Science GSCE (or equivalent) at grade C or above and it is essential for teaching. People with science qualifications at A level enter Law, Business as well as pure Science degrees, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinay Medicine, Pharmacy, the Environment, Engineering, Nursing, Sport, Teaching and many other related careers.
