GCSE Physical Education
The GCSE Physical Education course will develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of sport performance. The course will examine exercise and training and how this affects overall performance.

Students will study the safety aspects and risk assessment in sport and physical activity and learn about anatomy and physiology and the different body systems. There is a course work element; students will be required to complete a personal exercise programme concerned with their strongest sport.

The study of Sport and Physical Education links directly to the way that we live our lives today. It is a growing industry in the UK, especially as the Olympics will be based in London in 2012.
Entry requirements
Students must have a good level of literacy and numeracy, be well motivated and able to work as a team or independently. Good organisational skills and a strong interest in sport are a necessity. The practical component covers at least four different sports and it is essential that students play at least two different sports to a good level – ideally representing school at their main sport.
Method of Assessment
Students will complete a theory exam which lasts for 1 hour and 45 minutes and acounts for 40% of the final mark. The practical coursework (four activities) contributes 25% of the marks. Students will complete an Analysis of Performance on one activity for 10% and the final practical assessment of the same four activities is a further 25%.
Future opportunities
Students can continue studying Sport and can go on to complete the A Level Sport, then to University to study Sport and Leisure or Sport Science at Degree level. The GCSE Physical Education is the first rung on the ladder towards an exciting and dynamic career in sport.

To be successful students will need to be well organized, sporty and hard working. Representing the school for a sport is an advantage as it helps increase personal knowledge and skill levels.
