Edexcel Level 2 BTEC Certificate in Construction
A link course in partnership with Bishop Burton College. This qualification is work related and trowel occupation based. The BTEC Certificate is equivalent to two GCSEs ranging from A*A* to CC.
There are three units that must be achieved to gain the full certificate
Unit 1. An Introduction to the Construction Industry
Students will study the whole range of professions and roles within the construction industry. They will research some of the key factors affecting the development of work undertaken by the construction industry and look at its social and economic significance.
Unit 2. Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
Students will learn about the importance of health, safety and welfare, and the responsibility of the individual to themselves and to others in the construction and built environment sector. They will identify and describe the hazards and associated risks commonly encountered on construction sites.
Unit 3. Exploring Trowel Operations
Students will be able to identify and select appropriate hand tools and personal protective equipment to carry out basic brickwork and block work operations. This will include setting out activities and material handling to acceptable standards.
Qualities needed to Succeed
Students should:
- have a keen interest in construction and building design
- enjoy practical activities
- be able to interpret working drawings and have good observational skills
- be willing to produce written assignments which are well researched
- be capable of working to a deadline
- want to move onto a related career or into further education to study construction further.
Method of Assessment
All three units are awarded by a pass, merit, or distinction. Students will be required to produce a portfolio based on written assignments and complete a number of practical activities through simulation to complete the full award.The majority of the learning is based on practical assessments on a number of building structures, completing written assignments, visits where possible and individual research work.
Future Opportunities
The course will provide an insight into many aspects of the construction industry and provides an excellent progression route into modern apprenticeship and full time employment in the Construction Industry.
