BTEC First in Sport
This course comprises three units of work completed over two years.
- Unit 1: The Body in Sport,
- Unit 2: Health, Safety and Injury in Sport and
- Unit 3: Practical Sport.
The course is predominantly practical, aimed at individuals who are keen sportsmen or women with an interest in a career in the sport or leisure industry.The study of sport links directly to the way that we live our lives today. It is a growing industry in the UK, especially as the Olympics will be based in London in 2012.
Entry Requirements
A good level of literacy and numeracy is essential. Students must be motivated and able to work as a team or independently. A strong interest in sport is a necessity.
Method of Assessment
There are three units to complete for the First Certificate in Sport. Candidates have to complete each pass level activity before moving onto merit and distinction level activities. The final grade will be a pass, merit or distinction. This is the equivalent to two GCSEs at least at Grade C for the pass. The qualification is entirely coursework based – there is no formal examination. It is therefore vital that students meet the challenging coursework deadlines.
Future Opportunities
Students can continue studying Sport and go on to complete the BTEC National, then to University to study Sport and Leisure at Degree level. The BTEC First Certificate is the first rung on the ladder towards an exciting and dynamic career in sport.
Further Information
Students need to be well organised, sporty and hard working. Representing the school for a sport is an advantage as it helps increase the student’s knowledge in the Practical Sport unit.
