BTEC First Certificate in Public Services

(Uniformed) Level 2 - a link course in partnership with Bishop Burton College. This qualification is practical, work related and based around the uniform services. The BTEC Certificate is equivalent to two GCSE’s ranging from A*A* to CC.

There are three units that must be achieved to gain the full certificate.

Unit 1. Public Service Skills

Students will learn about the skills required to take part in the uniformed services, this will be based around team building skills, being an effective team member and leadership skills. This unit will involve research work.

Unit 2. Uniformed Public Service Fitness

This unit explores how the body works and how this affects the different levels of fitness. Students will learn about their own fitness and take part in fitness tests. Finally they will learn about how nutrition and lifestyle can affect their fitness level.

Unit 3. Adventurous Activities and Teamwork for the Public Services

Students will learn about the different groups in the community and the different activities each group takes part in. This may include some visits and guest speakers and participation in such activities as orienteering and map reading.

Method of Assessment

All three units are awarded by a pass, merit, or distinction. Students will be required to produce a portfolio based on written assignments and complete a number of practical activities through simulation to complete the full award.The majority of the learning is based on completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. As well as learning about their own chosen employment area students will develop skills needed to start a career.

Entry Requirements

Students should:

have a keen interest in the uniformed public services
enjoy practical activities
be able to work well with others and you have good observation skills
be willing to produce written assignments which are well researched.
be fit and active
be capable of working to a deadline
wish to move onto a related career or into further education to study construction further.

Future Opportunities

The course provide an insight into many aspects of the public service industry and provides an excellent progression route into further education and full time employment in one of the uniformed services

learn about the different professions with the industry and their roles
gain knowledge of teamwork and how they interact with others
have the opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way
develop skills which are highly valued by employers and can be used throughout life

On behalf of the President and members of Driffield Rotary Club, I write to thank the school for the cheque for £456.63, donated to go towards the cost of rebuilding the school in Sri Lanka destroyed by the Tsunami. It was very generous of the school’s Student Council to agreed to give the proceeds from the non-uniform in July to this very worthwhile project.
