Art and Design
Examination Board: AQA

The GCSE course offers Fine Art and Applied Art. Candidates have to produce a minimum of two projects for coursework and complete a ten hour Controlled Test towards the end of the two year course.
All the courses aim to develop the students’ individual art and design skills and personal responses to a variety of themes and projects. A wide variety of media will be experienced, including drawing and painting, sculpture, graphics, printmaking, 3D design, ceramics and ICT. Alongside this practical work, students will research contextual studies investigating the professional practice of artists, designers, craftspeople and the art and artefacts of other cultures.
Qualities Needed to Succeed
Students should enjoy being creative and imaginative with a real desire to express themselves through art and design. They should also be prepared to complete coursework and research outside of school as this is an essential part of the course.
Method of Assessment
Three units of coursework will be completed
- Year 10 GCSE: The school begin this first project, based on identity, over the summer holiday at the end of Year 9. Students are able to purchase A3 sketchbooks at cost price before commencing the course and are set tasks to complete over the summer holidays.
- Year 10 GCSE: A second project of work based on culture started in February and completed by October.
- Year 11 GCSE: The third project is selected by students from a range of past Controlled Test starting points, completing a final outcome for this project during mock week in December.
These units of work are regularly assessed on a lesson to lesson basis, through sketchbook checks and progress reports. Formal assessment takes place when each unit is completed.
- Year 11 GCSE: Controlled Test: The Exam Board sets approximately seven questions/starting points. These are given to candidates on 1st January and students select a question and then research ideas and prepare investigations. This research is then used to complete a final piece of work over a period of ten hours. Two full days are normally spent in the studios working on the Test, which accounts for 40% of the final GCSE grade. This usually takes place in April.
All coursework and the Controlled Test are internally assessed by Art and Design teachers, and externally moderated by the Exam Board.
Future Opportunities
Not everyone who does this course will be seeking a career in Art and Design. However, many students do pursue their interests through an AS/A2 Level course of study, or through a range of college courses. Career opportunities are very extensive in the fields of art and design, including graphic design, fashion design, fine art, media, film, photography, games design, architecture and teaching.
