Twilight Bus Service & Twilight Activity Programme
On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings students living in the surrounding villages are supported by the provision of late buses, which enable them to take part in activities after school and get a free bus home.
The Twilight Bus Service, which is now into its seventh year in operation, has proved to be a great success among both students and parents, and has opened up so many opportunities to the young people who use it.
Driffield School aims to support all students and to encourage them to participate fully in the wide variety of after school sports, activity clubs, performing arts, drama, music and study support activities, including access to the Learning Resources Centre and ICT / computer facilities, which we promote through our Twilight Activity Programme each school term.
Free travel to villages in Driffield School's catchment area
The aim of the Twilight Bus Service is to provide free travel to as many villages in Driffield School’s catchment area as possible. Where a service does not go into a village it will stop on the main road close-by, offering parents the opportunity to travel a short distance to a bus stop to collect their child, rather than having to make the journey all the way to Driffield School. A combination of existing commercial buses and tailor-made minibus/taxi services make up the seven different routes. Students who live on the outskirts of Driffield can also use the buses to get home.
The quality of the Twilight Services and the important role they play in the overall effectiveness of Driffield School was highlighted in the Ofsted Inspection Report, which was published on 1st November 2006, and which commented:
Supporting students from rural areas
As well as providing equality of opportunity for all students and support for working parents, the Twilight Bus Service ensures that students who live in rurally isolated areas are enabled to participate in the many activities on offer. The initiative has had the added environmental benefit of greatly reducing the number of parental car journeys to the school site; a welcome result in these days of global warming!
How the Twilight Bus Service Operates
Students wishing to travel on any of the TBS routes (including the minibuses and taxis) need to collect a book of colour-coded tickets from the LRC before they travel. Each book contains enough tickets for 12 journeys and, when they have run out, students simply collect another book from the LRC.
The tickets should be filled-in with the student’s destination (nearest village), the activity attended, the date of travel and their year/form group. A completed ticket should be handed to the bus driver each time a student travels on one of the designated Twilight Bus routes. Students who do not have the correct ticket for the route will not be permitted to travel. TBS tickets may only be used on the advertised routes and times.
