The New Eating Experience at Driffield School
An integral part of becoming a healthy school is healthy eating and the schoolís catering team have already made significant positive changes to the provision of healthy food and drink options throughout the school.
As part of the Healthy Schools Programme we have introduced the following healthy dietary changes to our already popular daily menus. We have:
- Increased the amount of fruit and vegetable content within our dishes
- Increased the type and style of salad, fruit and vegetables choices
- Increased the use of wholemeal flour and whole grain within dishes
- Made provision for chilled fresh water from vending machines
- Removed crisps, sweets and carbonated drinks
- Reduced the number of days that canteens provide fried food and the East Canteen has no fried food on its menu
- Reduced the supply of foods that have a high fat content such as sausage rolls and pasties.
All the above changes follow the recommendations and guidelines contained within the Government's new Food Policy in Schools book. For further information on healthy schools go to www.wiredforhealth.gov.uk.
Investment
There has been significant investment in the East Canteen to encourage older students to stay on site over the dinner time period. Improvements to the dining area in the North Canteen were completed in the Summer of 2008 and a similar upgrade will be carried out in West Canteen in due course.
Access Times
Food and drink is available at the following times during the day:
- 08.00 - 08.40 - Healthy Breakfast - all canteens
- 11.15 - 11.25 - Mid Morning Break - all canteens
- 12.30 - 13.20 - Lunch Time - all canteens
- 15.30 - 16.00 - Twilight Zone Tuck Shop (West Canteen) for students who take part in after school activities.
Students who bring a packed lunch
Students who bring their own food to school are expected to use the seating area in West Hall, or one of the designated outdoor areas which are being developed around the school site.
