Your On-Line Guide to the New Eating Experience at Driffield School

An integral part of becoming a healthy school is healthy eating and the school’s catering team have already made significant positive changes to the provision of healthy food and drink options throughout the school.

As part of the Healthy Schools Programme we have introduced the following healthy dietary changes to our already popular daily menus:

  • We have increased the amount of fruit and vegetable content within our dishes
  • Increased the type and style of salad, fruit and vegetables choices
  • Increased the use of wholemeal flour and whole grain within dishes
  • Provision for chilled fresh water from vending machines
  • Removed crisps, sweets and carbonated drinks
  • Reduced the number of days that canteens provide fried food and the east canteen has a totally free fried food menu base
  • Reduced the supply of foods that have an increased fat content; such as, sausage rolls and pasties.

All the above changes follow the recommendations and guidelines contained within the Government’s new food policy in schools book. For further information on the healthy schools website go to: www.wiredforhealth.gov.uk

Investment

Significant investment in the East Canteen has been undertaken to encourage older students to stay on site over the dinner time period. In the other canteens the furniture has been gradually updated over the last few years and we are hoping to change the environment of the dining areas at a later date to encourage greater use and provide a positive eating experience for all.

All three canteens are open during the following times:

Access to Canteen Facilities

Any student can go to any canteen for breakfast or mid morning break

At lunchtimes, students from year 7 to year 9 must go to the building that is allocated to them:

  • North Building – Wilberforce, Mortimer and Johnson Houses
  • West Building – Bronte, Fawcett and Holtby Houses
  • East Building – Is for all student of year 10 and upwards from any House

(Year 10 and upwards students may also access canteen facilities within their own respective houses)

Food on Offer

Each dining area provides a full menu choice for all the students from year 7’s to year 13’s, as well as all school staff and school visitors.

Each of the canteens provide a choice of traditional hot meals and or lighter bites such as sandwiches, wraps, salads and cold pastas.

New Cashless Payment System for Students and Staff

Since 3rd July 2006 the school has been operating the cashless payment system for the purchase of food and drinks known as “Impact”.

Pupils use a swipe card at the till point that shows their photo, amount on the card and how much the person has spent that day. This is instead of handing over cash to the till operator.

Money is added to the system by parents or students in the following ways:

Logging on to www.parentpay.com and using their debit / credit card to top up the students card. This method tops up the students card within 10 minutes of making a payment on line.

There are a lot of benefits to the cashless system and these include:

  • Convenience of paying for many weeks meals in advance
  • No more looking for change on a school morning
  • Discouraging the misuse of lunch money through spending in shops outside of the school grounds
  • Problems associated with the carrying of cash in school ie: loss, theft and bullying
  • Reduction in queuing times through increased speed of service
  • Healthy eating is encouraged and monitored.

Cheque

By Cheque payable to “ Driffield School” which can cover any fixed amount, this is credited to the students account by the following morning.

Cash

By cash into automatic cash revaluation machine terminals located within each building near the dining room areas. These machines are programmed to accept £2.00, £1.00, 50p, 20p and 10p coins.

Improvements

As part of the healthy school’s initiative we are also looking at improving the outside seating areas around the school site to encourage students to socialise.

If you have any comments or suggestions on how we may improve our catering service or maybe a favourite healthy recipe that we may be able to consider using, please contact the Driffield School Catering Manager by email at eastkitchen@driffield.e-riding.sch.uk

Thank you.
