Welcome from the Headteacher

Driffield School & Sixth Form is an 11 – 19 Comprehensive School which offers education for approximately 2,000 students living in Driffield and the Wolds.

Head TeacherStudents at Driffield School & Sixth Form succeed and succeed well. Attainment and achievement at all levels of ability is rising year by year and we are rightly proud of our students and the excellent support and opportunities they receive from staff. We have high expectations of our students and we esteem the qualities of tolerance, courtesy and hard work in the daily life of our school.

Broader educational opportunities

Whilst our students are very successful academically, we also regard the provision of broader educational opportunities as equally important. Our students are able to benefit from a wide range of activities which help them develop personally, socially and culturally and prepare them to become responsible citizens of the 21st Century. This aspect of our work is reflected in teaching and learning in the classroom and is enhanced by a vibrant programme of extra-curricular activities, exchanges and visits in the areas of sport, drama, music, foreign visits and much, much more. In short, we seek to provide an environment within which each child can feel secure and to which each student, whatever their strengths or abilities, can make a contribution. Students rise to the challenge of our high expectations of work, behaviour and discipline and enjoy being part of the school because they know they are valued.

A real community

Dance students

We are a real community built upon the foundations of trust, honesty and mutual respect. Our relationships with parents form the bedrock upon which each student’s success is built. We look forward to working with all parents and other partners in order to enhance further the many opportunities offered to the young people we serve and hope that everyone shares our pride in their outstanding achievements.

It is important to recognise that young people come with a variety of talents and gifts; there is an important place for the cheerful, the considerate, the shy and the extrovert. We hope we can provide opportunities for these attributes to shine. Young people also come with all sorts of needs. We aim to meet these needs through companionship, challenge, encouragement and a lot of care.

Driffield School & Sixth Form is a special place because of the emphasis we give to care. We have always laid great store on students obtaining their maximum potential. Academic success for all is important to us, and we believe in education for all throughout life.

Flexible and adaptable students

Science studentsAll our students can achieve great progress. We are fortunate to have a highly qualified and trained staff who are hard working and committed to the school. We need to help students to develop flexibility and adaptability. Unskilled jobs are increasingly rare and we need to work with parents to provide the skills, experiences and opportunities that will be needed if students are to cope with the demands of this century. We must therefore equip students with the necessary skills to use modern technology, learn independently, work in a group and lead a team. Such experiences come from lessons with a variety of teaching and learning formats, and also from our rich programme of extension activities. These include our sporting activities, Young Enterprise activities, Work Experience, exchange visits abroad and those visits organised locally to places of environmental, cultural or religious interest.

VALUES AND AIMS

Driffield School & Sixth Form is a high performing, inclusive school intent on best serving the needs of our community.

  • We recognise the vital importance of positive relationships that are founded on fairness, tolerance, mutual respect and trust.
  • We believe in being open and honest with each other, and supporting each other.
  • We want everyone to be able to contribute, and everyone to have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Above all else, we value each other.

Aims

  • To provide a safe, supportive and positive environment for learning, for all.
  • To inspire all students and raise aspirations.
  • To ensure that all students acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding to equip them for life.
  • To work collaboratively and sustainably with other partners to provide the best learning opportunities for our students, our staff and our community.

We hope that parents and students will share with us and help promote our aims and values. Driffield School & Sixth Form always welcomes parents and encourages them to play a full and active role in their child’s education. We look forward to building a long and rewarding partnership.

I just wanted the opportunity to thank you and all your staff for making our daughter’s first year at Driffield School such a successful and enjoyable experience. Since starting last September we have been impressed by the feedback from your staff in way of letters, postcards, praise and encouragement for our daughter. it is very much appreciated.

Parents of Year 7 student

I am writing to congratulate the Year 10 and Year 11 students who volunteered to take part in the mock interview process today which I was part of…. Students had taken time to do preparation work and the effort to look at the part of an interviewee. The students were a credit to the school and their parents. They were eloquent, enthusiastic and asked pertinent and searching questions of the interviewers.

Business Mentor

I would like to pass on our compliments to the staff for their positive input over the last term and a half. We are very pleased with our daughter’s progress and significant improvement in many subjects.

My wife and I were delighted to be able to obtain tickets for the Saturday performance of 42nd Street. We wish to applaud all those involved in the brilliant show – not just the main characters, tap dancers and singers, but the excellent musicians and their two teachers; the remarkably efficient scene shifters; and all of your staff responsible for a really professional production.

I am writing to thank Driffield School and the Sports Department for their help and support during 2007. We ran four very successful school biathlons (run/swim) in Driffield. Thank you for your continued support.

British Pentathlon Development Officer

We are delighted with our daughter's transfer to Driffield School. She is enthusiastic about everything - her lessons, teachers and the other students - she never stops talking about them when she gets home. It is lovely to see her re-discovering her enjoyment of school life. Thank you for all your help and support with this.

Parent of Year 10 student

My daughter has just completed her A Levels and has now left Driffield School. However, I couldn’t let the occasion go without writing to thank you and your school for looking after her and giving her such a fine education – and more. Her splendid ‘A’ Level results stand testimony to hard work on her part and a lot of effort, encouragement and perseverance from her teachers.

Parent of Year 13 student

I would just like to know how much I enjoyed Driffield School’s production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The singing, notably from pupils in the lead parts, was fabulous. The acting in every case was excellent as was the musical accompaniment from the orchestra. Well done to all involved for supporting and encouraging the students in this way.

On behalf of the President and members of Driffield Rotary Club, I write to thank the school for the cheque for £456.63, donated to go towards the cost of rebuilding the school in Sri Lanka destroyed by the Tsunami. It was very generous of the school’s Student Council to agreed to give the proceeds from the non-uniform in July to this very worthwhile project.

The International Committee of the Rotary Club

May I take this opportunity to thank your staff for a wonderful trip to Cork with the Driffield School Swing Band. The students were impeccable in all respects and a credit to the school and their teachers.

We wish to place on record our sincere thanks, and would ask you to pass on our gratitude to all the members of staff who taught our daughter, particularly in the past two ‘A’ Level years.
