Johnson House
Johnson House is located in the East Building together with Holtby House. Johnson House is named after the pioneering and inspirational aviator Amy Johnson. You can recognise our house by its distinctive logo and our house colour which is red.
Welcome to the Johnson House web page. I hope that you find the information on this page useful and that it tells you a little bit more about the unique characteristics and the organisation of this House.
Mrs Parsley
Johnson House has ten tutor groups which are located in rooms within the East Building. Each tutor group consists of between 25-30 students aged between 11 and 16. What We Do
In common with all other Houses in the school, the House Team (Mrs Parsley, Mrs Cage and Mrs Amers together with the form tutors and linked staff) is responsible for overseeing the pastoral care of the students within the house. This includes oversight of the following for all Johnson students:
- Attendance and truancy (working with the school attendance officer and educational welfare officer)
- Holiday requests
- Bullying issues
- Behaviour management (when this is an issue across more than one subject)
- Uniform compliance
- Implementation of the school smoking policy
- Monitoring of student progress within the school
- Any other pastoral issues which may affect the performance and general happiness of our students
Johnson House Priorities
Within Johnson House we strive to find the balance between ensuring that we apply all rules and policies in the same consistent manner throughout the school and also providing Johnson House with its own individual identity that our students can be proud of. As a result, this year we have agreed within the House Team our own Johnson priorities as follows:
- To improve Johnson student adherence to rules on uniform
- To ensure that Johnson students always have correct equipment and planners at school
- To increase the use of technology to aid communication within the house
- To increase the focus on those Johnson students that perform well in sporting activities
- To help support students reach their full academic ability
- To encourage more active participation of Johnson students in planning and supporting house activities
- To make the experience of tutor time more consistent across the tutor groups
Working With Students
We believe that it is important to give our students every opportunity to become involved in the decision- making process and day to day management of the House. One of the key roles to be carried out by students within the house is that of House Ambassador. House Ambassadors are students who are excellent role models for their peers and take a leading role in helping the House staff, particularly during tutor time. House Ambassadors are easily recognised by their red ‘Ambassador’ badges. This year we have extended these roles and now have Junior and Senior House Ambassadors. Junior Ambassadors are generally Y7 and Y8 students who help the house team during tutor time on a rota basis as well as undertaking other duties as requested. Senior Ambassadors are generally Y9 and Y10 students who represent the house on the school student council and also regularly give their opinion and input to Johnson House meetings. Johnson House also has a Leadership Team that have been voted for by the Johnson students. Currently Christian Rafferty is head boy for Johnson, Amy Gibson is head girl and Laura Hakner, Amy Charlton and Paige Wylie are all house prefects. Johnson students are also encouraged to work with Holtby students to promote the East Building charity - The Teenage Cancer Trust. Last year we established a charity committee comprising students from a range of age groups and tutor groups, who oversee our fundraising efforts. So far this we have raised well over £3000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust and East Building students can rightly be proud of their efforts.
