The facilities
Spiers Bank House stands in three acres of land and is an attractive, warm, stone-built property similar to many which can be seen throughout this area of North Yorkshire. The land, and the pond which has been created in one of the paddocks, is a natural habitat for the plants and abundant wildlife which can be found within its boundaries. A site conservation plan ensures the continuity of this project.
The facilities which the house enjoys were described some years ago to be “of Grade ‘A’ Youth Hostel standard”. Since then there have been further significant improvements to ensure the safety and comfort of those staying there. The main house has at its heart a spacious and lofty lounge which can be used either as a recreational or working area according to need. Its natural stone walls and pine boarded ceiling lend it a pleasant atmosphere and provide a constant reminder of the rugged natural landscape in which the house is situated. The lounge also provides access to a small staff kitchen. Dormitory facilities within the house benefit from en suite or adjacent toilet and washing/showering facilities. Further dormitory space with en-suite provision is also available elsewhere on site in the bunkhouse. Both house and bunkhouse have separate staff bedrooms with bunk or twin-bedded provision. In all there is space to accommodate 22 students plus their supervising staff in comfort.
In 1991 a new kitchen and dining room was constructed close to the house itself. This is a spacious, self catering facility equipped with separate cooking stations where students can store ingredients, cook and eat the meals they prepare. A freezer and fridges ensure that food is kept fresh and for non perishable items individual storage compartments within the kitchen provide ample additional capacity. With its large tables and stools, this comfortable space is also a useful working and study area at other times. Out of range of terrestrial television and mobile phone signals, the site offers a peaceful and undisturbed working environment.
