Helping a community in Malawi to achieve the Millennium Development Goals
In 1997 I was invited by a friend to go to Malawi. This opportunity had a significant impact on my life. It was a great to see the strength of their communities, the wonderful way that we were honoured and made to feel welcome and the abundance of joy that they exuded. Of course this was contrasted with scenes of extreme poverty and people struggling to survive in the most difficult of circumstances.
In 1999 we began a project to try and help one community lift themselves out of poverty. We are focussing on the Millennium Development Goals which include:
- The eradication of extreme poverty and hunger
- Reducing child mortality
- Improving maternal health
- Achieving universal primary education
- Combating HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases
- Developing aid, trade and global partnerships
-
We are working with a community at Mbulukuta village.
Most people are subsistence farmers with an average income of less than a dollar day. Last year 23% of families experienced a death in the family. They have no access to health care.
Our project is supported by the staff and students of Driffield School, local charities, the local churches and many very generous and helpful individuals who have contributed very generously to our projects. These projects include:
- In 1999 the building of a new church and community centre
- In 2001 the building of a borehole to provide clean water
- In 2003-5 the training of orphans in carpentry skills
- In 2005 the charity MOSES was established by an ex Driffield school teacher Dave Grainger to provide school fees for orphans in Secondary school
- In 2007 an enterprise project was started producing bags for sale here in the UK
- In 2007 an agriculture and irrigation project to improve agricultural practice and enable farmers to become self sufficient.
- In 2008 a Dispensary will be opening to begin to provide a basic level of health care
In addition to these students of Mortimer House are supporting a HIV centre at Jali and the students of Wilberforce House support an orphan centre in Blantyre.
